DODGY APRICOT

Yamaha Portasound PSS-11 (1992)

The PSS-11 uses an AWM (Advanced Wave Memory) tone generator, Yamaha's attempt to create more realistic sounds based on samples, seen as a step up from the FM sound chips that had dominated the PSS range in the second half of the 90s.

The PSS-11 has only 39 basic sounds, including percussion. The rest of the 100 voices on offer are variations of the other 39, including layered dual voice, split keyboard, extra sustain, harmony (changing harmony in step with the auto accompaniment), and echo (a rudimentary delay effect that changes delay time in step with the tempo).
